Not All Moissanites Are Created Equal

As pioneers of the moissanite industry, we have always known that moissanite would become mainstream. Over the years, we’ve worked with the finest, most reputable laboratories to grow the best quality Moissanite. With the increase in popularity of Moissanite comes a surge of companies who want to capitalize on the monetary opportunities, without considering the best interest of consumers. Unfortunately, some new companies are taking advantage of people by selling lower quality moissanite with the sole purpose of increasing their bottom line.

The first big distinction comes in the method in which Moissanites are certified. Many Moissanite suppliers do not take extra measures to ensure the certificates they receive are accurate. We have seen various Moissanite certificates sold to unaware customers that had incorrect information on it. From its colour grading, clarity, carat weight, and dimensions. Ensure your moissanite supplier provides you with a locally verifiable certificate. Our Moissanites are certified by The Gem Lab. To verify your report visit www.thegemlab.co.za.

As more companies jump on the Moissanite bandwagon, we’re noticing the quality of some growers not living up to the high standards we’ve set. Many growers, primarily those in Asia and India, are pushing out moissanite without focusing on the quality, and then being sold onto customers here in South Africa.

No two Moissanites are created exactly 100% identically. There are varying levels of inclusions and color variations. In the example below, we show an Origin Diamonds 1.00ct Moissanite with a color grading of G and clarity of VS. The other sample is from a non-Origin company and is also graded as 1.00ct, G color, VS clarity. As you can see, the other Moissanite contains visible inclusions despite having an identical grade and does not meet the high standards of the Origin Moissanite available for purchase at Origin Diamonds.

We always tell consumers to make sure any moissanite over 0.3ct comes with a grading certificate, but clearly, that is not always enough. Trusting the company you’re buying from is important to ensure your Moissanite matches what is on the grading report. Basically, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

It’s incredibly important for consumers to do their homework. Make sure you are ordering from a reputable company with a long history of selling the highest quality Moissanite. Make sure you ask where it is grown and how it is certified. At Origin Diamonds we only work with reputable growers so we can ensure our customers receive the highest quality stones; we will work with you to make sure you receive the quality you deserve, at an affordable price for your forever ring!
